Water security is bigger than a single season.
Texas Water Initiative exists to help secure the future of Texas water security by making the systems, choices, and stakes easier to understand—and easier to act on.
Our mission
Make the long view useful now.
Water decisions can feel technical, distant, and easy to postpone. Our role is to connect the evidence to the people and places it affects.
We serve two audiences at once: Texans who want a clear way to understand and support water security, and lawmakers who need a public mandate for the investments and policies that make resilience possible.
That means translating the case for action without flattening it. It means showing how drought, growth, infrastructure, groundwater, and natural systems fit together. And it means making the next step visible: read the brief, share the facts, or sign the petition.
What guides us

The work asks for attention, not alarm. Clear information gives people somewhere solid to stand when the choices get complicated.
Evidence first
We start with the clearest available facts, then explain why they matter in daily life and public decisions.
Local context
Texas is one state made of many watersheds, aquifers, towns, farms, and neighborhoods. Place changes the question.
Useful balance
We make room for the tradeoffs. A durable plan should be ambitious enough for the challenge and practical enough to build.
Shared responsibility
The public conversation belongs to everyone affected by the outcome—and that means every Texan.
Why this matters
A shared resource needs a shared conversation.
Families, farmers, cities, businesses, and ecosystems experience water policy differently. They still depend on the same underlying work.
When people can see the connection between a dry river, an aging pipe, a growing town, and a policy choice, water stops being an abstract problem.
When lawmakers can see the public is ready for durable action, long-term planning has a stronger foundation.
